Countries with a higher Marine Trophic Index (MTI) have fish catches consisting of taxa from higher trophic levels, while lower scores consist of taxa further down the food web. If MTI decreases over time, this may be due to countries depleting stocks of higher level fish and resorting to lower level taxa, also known as "fishing down the food web." Data for this indicator come from the Sea Around Us, who have developed a new metric of the decline in MTI over time. This metric is a slope, calculated as the change in MTI between it's maximum and current values divided by the number of years since the maximum value. In the 2020 EPI, a score of 100 indicates no decline in MTI, and a score of 0 indicates the sharpest decline in MTI.
