Future Work

The next efforts related to the Environmental Performance Index involve a closer focus on environmental performance issue by issue. Our first area of focused effort will be air quality and air pollution; the purpose of this effort is four-fold:

1. Synthesize the best thinking of scientists and practitioners about how air quality and air pollution should be measured.
2. Characterize the gap between current measurement schemes and what should be done.
3. Identify targets of opportunity, if they exist, to pull together useful first steps or demonstrations of how such new strategies could be rolled out.
4. Galvanize action around funding and implementing the best ideas. While we will continue to produce a set of core environmental indicators, we would now like to concentrate our efforts one topic at a time, as we believe this focus will foster a deeper examination of environmental performance on the global scale.
